This paper focuses on the ways in which Willa Cather’s One of Ours depicts the different challenges faced by the protagonist, Claude Wheeler, who succeeds and finds peace by fighting for his country during a war. The story follows Claude through his many hardships as he fights for his nation throughout a war, eventually emerging victorious and bringing about peace. For Claude, triumph represents the pinnacle of splendour. He fails in his marriage or his studies. He believes that the risk of dying in a soulless world is greater than that of dying in a conflict. Violence, as well as images of struggle and repression, define him. He passes away victorious, feeling that he has accomplished something greater. He comes to terms with the world and himself. He ultimately sacrifices his life for the newly discovered nation. When he loses his life in battle for a just cause, the ideals come to pass. Claude finds pleasure in giving back to the community and feeling a part of it. Even if it means losing their life, they work hard to complete their task. Claude gives his entire being to a community and the path that leads to pursuing the ideal. He satisfies everyone’s desire for achievement as well as his own needs. Despite the difficulties he faces, he realises the goals he had when he was younger. He is a man of humanity, understanding, and refinement and taste. His life gives hope for human potential again, and his efforts lead to various conflicts that are ultimately resolved by its triumph.
